Sir Thomas Stanhope of Shelford: local life in Elizabethan times by Beryl Cobbing and Pamela Priestland (Ashbracken, 2003)

"An important new biography of one of the major figures in the political scene of Elizabethan Nottinghamshire and south Derbyshire". Lavishly illustrated, the book covers the life of Sir Thomas Stanhope (c.1540-1596), whose fame and notoriety extended beyond the county: his activities were often of concern to the royal court.

Iron Age jewellery found
Metal detectorist Maurice Richardson has discovered a 2,000 year old solid gold torque in a field near Newark. He has reported his find to the Nottinghamshire Coroner as treasure trove and it has been sent to the British Museum for valuation. More details on the The Guardian website.

Cover of Timber frame buildings of NottinghamshireA fascinating and generously illustrated book on the Timber-frame buildings of Nottinghamshire by Jason Mordan (Historic Buildings Officer at Nottinghamshire County Council's Heritage Team) has recently been published. Mordan describes 22 of the county's finest timber-framed buildings. Copies can be ordered directly from the council's Heritage Team or bought from selected county public libraries.

Lottery Fund award for Cresswell Crags

Welchman Picture Archive
Bassetlaw Museum was awarded £78,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to digitise 20,000 photographs taken by the Welchman family from Retford. Photographs taken between 1900 and 1960 are now available to browse online on the Bassetlaw Museum website.

Castles of Nottinghamshire
The Sherwood Forest Trust is co-ordinating a major programme of work to restore large areas of the forest. One of the projects is studying castles in the county and volunteers are needed to help out. More information and contact details on the Nottinghamshire County Council website.
