Overseers of the Poor. 3 Houses. Richard Morris, Joseph Northedge, John Lindley. now 129, 131 and 133. The Overseers of a Parish had to administer the Poor Law, and their accounts are often very interesting. Unfortunately the accounts for Ordsall are lost. Their duty was to look after the poor in the parish, and see that strangers did not come in from other parishes. They found work for the unemployed, and gave relief to old people and orphans. An Act was passed in 1722 to set up Workhouses in towns, but this did not affect villages for a long time afterwards. Three Workhouses were built in the three old parishes of Nottingham in 1726. Here the Overseers owned these cottages in High Street, where they allowed old people to live, and they had two or three cottages on Thrumpton Green at the back of the present school. They were also trustees for the small Charity field at Whitehouses, which we have mentioned before. |

Inhabitants of Ordsall. The Pound. Pulled down. 135 now stands here. Every village had a Pound in former days. They may still be seen at Headon, Rampton, and other places. Stray cattle were placed here, and the owners fined. The official in charge was called a Pindar, and he was sometimes elected at Easter. After the Local Government Act these duties were taken over by the rural police, and the village pounds were no longer kept in repair. Probably after the Enclosure of the Commons and Open Fields cattle did not stray so much, and the pounds were not needed. |
