Ancient Records relating to Mansfield

THE following excerpts from the Tower Records relate to the Manor of Mansfield; the granting of house bote and hay bote, and other matters of interest:—

The Manor of the Dean of Lincoln.— The Patent Rolls in the Tower of London contain the following: "Secunda et ultima pars patent di anno 8th Regis Richardi Secundi." Number 36. "Perampt ex emplificat Libert allocat super brevi de quo. Warranto Decano Lincoln in Manuiis suis de Eyton Wurkesworth Cestrified et Wingworth in com. Derb. ac in mannio suo de Manesfield in com Nottingham per quaam apparit quod qui frangunt assisam panis et cervisiae puniendi sunt per pillorium et tumbrellum et non per amerciamenta et quia Decanus pro istus modi delictis punire tenente delinquentes per amerciamenta libertater suae fuerunt forisfactae et seisitae. "Henriicus Die Gratia Rex Anglie Thomo de Birkin salutem Precipi-mus tibi quod pmittat homines nostros de Mansfield habere Husbote et Heybote in Foresta nostra de Shirewood sicut in ea habero consue-verunt temporibus Henrici Regis avi nostri Ricardi avuncti nostri et Domini J. RECORDS OF THE BOROUGH OF NOTTINGHAM.

The following extracts from the Records of the Borough of Nottingham refer to Mansfield.—Extracts from the Chamberlain's account, p. 122:—

1557-8. Fees wayges and luyeries. Item peyd for the charges of Maister Heakey, Colman, Alvye, Denyse, Cowper and William Carecke at Man(s)feld, when they went to the justices consernyng the settyng furthe of our souldiers, the Freydey befor Palme Sondey, for dynner there iijs. iiijd. 1615. P. 395. Calendar of Charters. August 15, 1615. Copy of court roll of Gilbert Earl of Shrewsbury, of his Manor of Mansfield, and the admission of John Alton, gentn., his tenant of a close called "Nottingham Yate Close" in the South Field of Mansfield. Stretton MSS. No. xxxvii.

1551. P. 396. Calendar of Charters, 1551, September 25, award of John Chawmbers, William Wyld, John Walker, and John Cost of Mawnsfeld, in Schyrwood Notts, arbitrators between John Alton and Thomas Altoon, of the same town, whereby they award that the said John and Thomas Altoon "schall brotherlye schake handes the one with the other; the said John Altoon to have the houses in Lemyng Lane; from Oliver Dan's shop to the nethermost doorpost of the nether stable, the buttery adjoining thereto and 'theyr anend from the gorunde to ye rooffe of the howse, with a gardyn stakyd owte off the baksyde of William Morthewete, corryor; a tenement in the tenure of Willyam Abell spurrier with all the baksyde thereto, the close held by Robert Heyward with the land ends thereto belonging; another close called 'the Cok Place,' with two landes lying in the Moore Lane Closse, with a quick sett hedge; a rood of land lying in Bancroft, near the Olar Meadow, with two roods of land going over Woodhowse Gate buttyng of Byrche Hyl; a rood 'lying after' a close of John Garlykes, which he took of Oliver Dan; half of a 'land' going over Wood Howsse Nab, 'buttying of Hancock hadeland;' three 'lands' bounding the far end of Sir Christopher Grawnger's close; two 'lands' bounding the close of John Chawmbers atte the Ouer Ludgate; three lands at Spottyl Furthe well bounding Bancroft hedge; 'a land lying of Bromhyll'; four of the farthest 'lands' of the seven 'lands' at the Over Lydgate; four roods of land between the close of Oliver Dans' and the close of Robert Barlow's, abutting on the 'Quarrell' water; two roods of land abutting on the Carr Leys; and the rood of land in the Northe Felde, abutting on the Cowshoot Hedge."—Stretton MSS.
