FOREWORD
by
HIS GRACE THE DUKE OF PORTLAND, K.G.
President of the Notts. Rural Community Council

As President of the Nottinghamshire Rural Community Council I have much pleasure in commending to the public Mr. J. Bramley's Short History of the Religious Houses in Nottinghamshire, especially as the house at Welbeck, on the site of the former Premonstratensian Abbey, was my birthplace, and incorporates part of the original Abbey.

Mr. Bramley has made a careful study of all the former religious houses in this county, and during his long connection with the administration of Education in Nottinghamshire he had many opportunities of inspecting such remains of those houses as still exist. I hope, therefore, that the results of his labours will interest all those who wish to learn something of the history of those ancient houses and their inmates.

The Rural Community Council is to be congratulated on publishing this history, and I wish it every success.

PRESIDENT.
